After anxiously waiting out a thunderstorm for an hour, the first Rams to race were the 6th grade girls. Newcomer Aubree offered a glimpse of her potentially successful cross country career by finishing in 3rd place in the race. Her two-mile time of 14:40 was the 26th fastest time by a 6th grader in the state of Michigan this year. Faith was the next G-A finisher as she took 26 seconds off of her previous best time and finished in the top 10. Megan also had her best time of the season while finishing 19th. Aubree, Faith and Megan all earned medals. Madison had the largest improvement of any Ram runner today, cutting 30 seconds off of her previous best time. Aleigha was happy to conquer this course the second time around and finished in 33rd. Overall, the 6th grade girls earned a score of 73, finished in 4th place (out of 8), and were only three points away from finishing in the top three.
In the 7th/8th grade boys' race, Sam cranked out his best race of the season. He ran today's 2-mile course in essentially the exact same time that he ran the 1.85 mile course at Comstock last time. With a strong finish, he crossed the line in 19th place and earned a medal. Blake ran his best race of the past few weeks with a 27th place finish and Josh made his cross country debut with a finishing time of 17:19. Daniel ran his best race of the season, and Zack once again cut time off of his personal best, this time shaving 19 seconds off of his 2-mile time. The boys finished the meet in 5th place as a team.
As the evening wound down, the primetime performance was that of the 7th and 8th grade girls. With by far her fastest time ever, Lauryn pulled away for a convincing win in a time of 13:28 to become the 2014 Conference Champion! As this is the last year of the KVA, she will never have to defend her crown and can wear it for life!
Having a conference champ on your team is sweet, but Hannah and Jacey made it sweeter by also finishing in the top 5. That's right, G-A's three 7th grade girls all finished in the top 5 of the league's 7th/8th grade championship race! Hannah crossed the line in 4th and Jacey used a lifetime-best race to propel her to 5th place. Needing two more finishers to earn a team score, Taryn did more than just finish, she earned a top-20 medal in her first ever cross country race. And Sam overcame a wrong turn to finish the race and give the girls a shot at some post-race hardware. After the points were totaled, G-A's girls won the runner-up trophy as the league's second-best team! They were only 4 points away from first place, but were thrilled to be awarded for their accomplishments.
It was an outstanding night to be associated with G-AXC. This is a tremendous group of student-athletes who deserve to be recognized for their efforts. Thanks to the fill-in athletes who helped earn the team's scores, and hats off to all G-A runners on a fine night of competing.
