Although the disc seemed to stay in the air for an eternity, the wait was even longer. Ryan paced back and forth near the discus sector, waiting for his farthest throw to be measured. After two more throwers completed their turns, the event judge stepped into the circle and everyone waited anxiously. The sound of the tape measurer unwinding was a glorious sound, but not as wonderful as the sound of Ryan's celebration when the judge read of the distance. "One Fifty-Four and Ten Inches," she declared, and a yell rang out of Ryan's mouth that could be heard across the facility. Although this was not the usual grunt of exertion that our team has become familiar with from Ryan's throws--this was pure joy. In only his junior year, Ryan had thrown a disc almost six feet farther than any student in G-AHS history.
The weather was perfect for the meet against Parchment, and Ryan's record-setting throw was the highlight of the day. The boys' throwers swept both the shot and the disc, as Tristan and Nathan W. teamed up with Ryan for a total of 18 points in the throws. Cole knocked three seconds off of his 400m time to finish in 58.8 and Jimmy broke 20 seconds in the hurdles for the first time ever. Robert PR'd in the 300m hurdles and Nathan C. shaved five seconds off of his mile time while winning two events.
In the girls' meet, it was an excruciatingly close meet, but our team edged out a win at the end. Sierra B. won three separate events, either setting or tying season bests in all three. Bethy won the 100m hurdles with a lifetime best time, and also ran a third place in the 800m just seconds after finishing the 300m hurdles. Savanna won the long jump and ran a lifetime best time in the 100m dash--a time that is faster than the state qualifying standard for regionals. The 4x100m team won their race handily and Madison won the high jump. Taylor set a PR in the shot and Alyssa did in the disc as the girls' throwers outscored Parchment 17-1.
The girls finished the dual meet portion of our season with a record of 3-1. Next week at the Jamboree we will add a total of four more wins or losses to our regular season record before heading to the KVA meet.
